Explain what people will wear and what clothes your family will wear. “People tend to wear dressing-up clothes, not jeans or shorts.” “I’ll be wearing my black dress and you’ll wear your dark blue pants and sweater.”

As always, be open to your child’s questions. If she is scared by the idea of attending a funeral, even after your explanation, try to find out what it is that seems challenging rather than assuming it is the funeral itself.

In Chapter 7 you met Theo, who stomped in anger when he learned his grandfather had died. He told his parents he didn’t want to attend the funeral. His mother thought he was scared by the idea of the casket, but after gentle questioning it turned out that he had other worries.

“I don’t want to sit still for so long,” Theo said. “It’ll be boring.”

His father suggested that he bring along a quiet toy of some kind, and his mother wondered if someone might take him for a walk if he grew restless during the service. With these accommodations in place, Theo felt comfortable enough to go to the funeral with his parents and sister.

He managed to sit quietly through much of it, but when he grew fidgety, his older cousin took him out of the church and for a walk through the grounds.

“We asked him about his experience,” his dad told Elena later. “He said the funeral was okay, he was glad to see his cousins, and the cookies at the reception were the best!”
